We have 3 boys at home. The oldest is now 17, the middle 15 and the youngest almost 7. What I didn’t know when the first 2 were born is how important the first 7 years of our lives are. You develop the foundation of your programming and your beliefs.
You are the creator of your life. When I first heard that statement, I thought “good, then I’m going to make the necessary changes”. Less was the realization that my life of that moment was therefore already created by me. Consciously and unconsciously.
In the latter, the unconscious, is precisely the challenge. In our lives we are raised and influenced, so to speak, programmed. The way in which we are programmed depends on the culture in which we grow up, the people we meet, the experiences we have and the information we receive through, for example, books, television and, nowadays, social media.
All this information is stored and used by your subconscious in making choices. Information combined with strong feelings such as happiness, fear or anger have a greater influence. Your subconscious can’t distinguish between what you actually experience and what you see on TV for example, which evokes certain emotions.
Your subconscious, your ego, has the goal of survival. To do this, information from the past is used for the choices you make during the day. Situations that were experienced as
Situations that were experienced as threatening in the past are tried to be avoided and that which (briefly) gave a good feeling is pursued. What you see or experience is thus continuously tested. That big dog that gave you a frightened feeling at the age of 4 is still avoided 40 years later, even though it is relatively speaking a much smaller dog.
Fortunately, there is also a “navigation system” built in that indicates what to look for and what choices to make. However, this is not part of our education in the Western world. Therefore, the first signals from this system are often ignored or missed. A feeling that you have that you should or should not do something, but that goes against what you’ve been given from home or what your friends think, is often ignored for a long time. Until the signal is so strong, for example burn-out, illness or loss, that we can no longer ignore it and decide to “change course”.
“I started listening to my feelings more.” you often hear then. But that is precisely the tricky part, because that feeling can arise from the programming of your past or from your navigation system. And how do you know the difference?
Your programming or ego is usually very clear and based on your past. It is also often based on negative feelings like fear, loss, and what-will-they-not-think. Your navigation system is more subtle and positive. For example, a passion that you would like to follow or something that suddenly attracts or touches you without you knowing why. I assure you: following your navigation instead of your programming gives a positive change with unexpected outcomes in your life.
Believe me …… or not.
